DEAR DEIDRE: HOW can I persuade my husband to wash his hands when he comes home?
I am 72 and classed as extremely vulnerable to Covid. I’ve barely left the house for a year.

My team and I are working safely from home but we are here to help you as always.
He’s 74 and goes to the shops most days. He wears a mask and isn’t a Covid denier. But he never washes his hands when he comes back in the front door.
I’ve told him before how important it is but he scoffs and says I’m just making a fuss.
It’s causing arguments between us, as I feel he doesn’t care about my health, while he thinks I’m nagging him.
He’s never been good at personal hygiene. He doesn’t wash his hands after peeing either. It’s always bothered me.
Now I’m anxious he could be risking my life.

DEIDRE SAYS: Your husband is being selfish and is also ignoring the scientific advice. Washing hands is one of the most effective ways to prevent transmission of Covid-19.
He might not dismiss your concerns so easily if you practise some assertiveness techniques as described in my Standing Up For Yourself support pack.
Put a table by the front door with some hand sanitiser on it and a big sign saying: “Use me before you come into the house.”
