Recovering alcoholic Susannah Constantine slams booze makers for contributing to women’s drink problems

RECOVERING alcoholic Susannah Constantine has slammed booze makers who contribute to women developing drink problems which see them branded as “bad mothers and easy lays.”

The former star of TV show What Not to Wear, which she hosted with Trinny Woodall, said big companies target the female market with their ad campaigns.

In 2020 Susannah, 58, said she’d spent seven years battling her alcohol addiction and now tries to raise awareness of the issue by talking about it publicly.

She said: “So much of the marketing surrounding alcohol is geared towards women. It’s almost like we’re being targeted.

“Of course at the end of the day it’s our choice, but that aggressive imaging that comes out way constantly is very damaging.

“One of the reasons why a lot of women have such shame about talking about it is if a woman drinks too much, she’s got children for example, she’s a bad mother.

“If she’s not married or single, and she drinks too much, she’s an easy lay.”

Speaking on an Instagram live, she insisted men who indulged in booze weren’t perceived in the same way.

She added: “When a man goes off to the pub with his mates and he doesn’t drink he’s a loser, you’re not one of the boys.

“There’s that rugby and sport culture when men are perceived as being more macho the more they drink.

“Whereas for women, you’re a dirty drunk – the two tags for each of the sexes is totally different.”

Susannah is still best known for co-hosting BBC1’s What Not to Wear, where she and Trinny would tear people’s wardrobes apart before restyling them.

She’s since gone on to write books and last year launched her own podcast, interviewing the likes of movie star Kristin Scott Thomas, 60, and 68-year-old music legend Nile Rodgers.
